Parking
Understanding Isle of Palms' parking regulations and availability helps residents and visitors navigate the island more effectively.
Parking Permits
The city website provides all information regarding parking on Isle of Palms. https://www.iop.net/beach-and-resident-parking
FOR RESIDENTS:
All parking permits can be applied for online at parkiop.org. In order for your application to be approved, you must upload current and correct documentation, as described in the application. Note that Wild Dunes residents do not need the Isle of Palms decal: the current WD Resident decal is valid for the municipal lots and for parking in a Resident Parking District where parking is for residents only 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Pick up decals at the PCI Municipal Services office, which is located at 30 J C Long Blvd, Isle of Palms (Public Safety Building, 2nd Floor).
Residents with properly credentialed vehicles can park in the Municipal Lots anytime free of charge as well as resident-designated spaces in front of the community dock at the IOP Marina. A properly credentialed vehicle is one that has a City issued Resident Parking Permit or a Wild Dunes Resident decal.
Parking Inventory
Isle of Palms offers a total of 1,754 parking spaces distributed across various locations, as illustrated in the graphic. The largest concentration is at the Isle of Palms County Park, with 441 spaces. City lots provide substantial parking as well, with 393 spaces east and 100 spaces west of Pavilion Boulevard. Other notable areas include Palm Boulevard between the 21st and 41st streets has 233 landward and 203 seaward spaces. Additional parking can be found on Ocean Boulevard between 10th and 14th streets (155 spaces), Palm Boulevard landward from 41st to 57th streets (128 spaces), road right-of-way between 3rd and 10th streets (61 spaces), Breach Inlet parking (30 spaces), and a small section on Palm Boulevard between Carolina and 3rd streets (10 spaces). These spaces ensure ample parking for residents and visitors alike.
BIPA's Position
With more than 8 times the number of parking spaces required for “full and complete” access, BIPA fully supports the 2015 Parking Plan, which is housed within the Local Comprehensive Beach Management Plan. However, because the angled parking on the landward side of Palm Boulevard impedes the flow of traffic every time an exiting vehicle backs onto Palm Boulevard, we advocate for the implementation of a comprehensive plan for all of Palm Boulevard. This plan would encompass:
-
Parking that would not impede the flow of traffic.
-
Bike lanes.
-
Crosswalks that align with beach access paths for the safety of beachgoers.
Additionally, we fully support the current parking restrictions in Resident Parking Districts; such restrictions are critical for the safety of resident families.
