Local Comprehensive Beach Management Plan (LCBMP)
Every coastal community in SC must provide this document to DHEC and revisit it every 5 years. Isle of Palms' review was approved in July 2023.
The Local Comprehensive Beach Management Plan (LCBMP) Review for 2023 provides an updated strategy for managing the Isle of Palms' beach to ensure its sustainable use and enjoyment by residents and visitors. Key elements include the history of the plan’s approval and revisions, highlighting significant events such as the passage of the Beach Management Reform Act and the completion of the 2018 beach restoration project. The review outlines current beach management issues, such as erosion control, public beach access, and drainage of low-lying areas. It also emphasizes the City’s commitment to maintaining public beach access, with 56 public access points over approximately 4.6 miles of beach, far exceeding the required number for full public access. The document discusses the City's proactive measures in beach nourishment, shoreline monitoring, and adopting stringent regulations to protect the beach and its natural resources. The plan also addresses strategies for mitigating erosion, managing beach parking, and enhancing public safety through comprehensive planning and zoning regulations.
